Smart Condo: Call for Tenant Applications

Posted on April 19, 2022 in Research, Innovation & Quality Improvement News

What is the Smart Condo?

The Smart Condo Project is a collaborative effort between The Brenda Strafford Foundation and Health Cities.

The project develops a “sandbox” environment to be deployed within a Brenda Strafford Foundation condo unit in close proximity to Brenda Strafford Foundation facilities. Innovative solutions will be selected and installed to monitor the health of a selected condo tenant in an effort to slow, or reverse, any decline in health to aid aging in place.

Evidence shows that technology can play a meaningful role in helping older adults remain safe, independent, and connected to their homes and communities. This Smart Condo project is focused on achieving these key objectives:.

  • Attract an individual to live within the Smart Condo and interact directly with technology that will support aging at home.
  • Select, implement, and evaluate Smart Condo technologies that are both consumer health and health delivery focused.
  •  Share the results and inform future policy, funding, and business decisions.

Call for Tenant Applications - Open Now!

The Brenda Strafford Foundation is seeking a tenant interested in exploring aging in place options for a Smart Condo project. The ideal candidate will be an independently living senior with an interest in learning how innovative technologies and solutions can improve health outcomes for aging individuals.

Important considerations for living in the Smart Condo:

  • The Smart Condo is located in Maple (Independent Senior Living) in University District, NW Calgary.
  • The lease will be fixed for one year with an ideal/expected move in date of June 1, 2022.
  • The rent for the Smart Condo is listed at a subsidized rate of $1,700 per month. This is the rate for single or double occupancy and includes internet and utilities (heat, electricity, water).
  • The selected tenant(s) must consent to participate in research and evaluation activities and consent to data sharing. The expected time commitment is up to three hours per month.
  • While living in the Smart Condo, the tenant will occasionally experience necessary disruptions (for e.g. physical renovations and installation of technologies).
  • The unit is unfurnished. Technology/devices required for research and evaluation purposes will be supplied but the tenant is responsible for providing all other furnishings for the condo unit.
  • The tenant will be responsible for their own health and healthcare. Health services beyond the health technology that is part of the Smart Condo experience will not be provided by The Brenda Strafford Foundation or partners.

For more information on the Selection Criteria, Terms of Rent, and Expectations please view the Tenant Application Form.
