The Government of Alberta’s Alberta Health Continuing Care system provides Albertans with the health, personal care and accommodation services they need to support their independence and quality of life.
The ability to pay will not be a barrier to accessing continuing care living options. Alberta Health Services has made a commitment to ensure Alberta seniors and adults with disabilities receive the care services they require to support wellness and independence as they age. Health care and personal care services in Designated Supportive Living and Long Term Care facilities are publicly funded through Alberta Health Services Continuing Care programs and services.
Publicly funded health care and personal care services are provided through Alberta Health Services in a Designated Supportive Living setting, based on an individual’s assessed unmet need. Individuals are responsible for the cost of accommodation in a Designated Supportive Living facility, and are responsible for arranging and paying for any additional services that they choose.
Publicly funded health care and personal care services are provided through Alberta Health Services in Long Term Care facilities, based on an individual’s assessed unmet need. Individuals are responsible for the cost of accommodation in a Long Term Care facility, as well as for any additional care or support services that are not already part of the care plan completed by the AHS Case Manager.
Residents in a Designated Supportive Living or Long Term Care facility pay an Accommodation Fee to cover the costs of providing accommodations and services like meals, housekeeping and building maintenance. These accommodation fees within continuing care facilities are set by Government of Alberta.
