- Provide financial assistance to our staff to support them to repair and rebuild their homes
- Repair and replace our medical clinic infrastructure and equipment at the Institut

On August 14, 2021, a massive 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck southern Haiti, devastating this underserved area of the Caribbean: 120,000 homes were damaged or destroyed, 12,000 people injured, and 2,200 deaths occurred, leaving 650,000 people in need of humanitarian assistance.
As you may know, The Institut Brenda Strafford in Southern Haiti, which is part of The Brenda Strafford Foundation, a registered Canadian charity, was significantly affected by the earthquake. Many buildings at The Institut and homes of our 108 staff were damaged, disrupting multiple services. However, our dedicated staff went into action, providing medical care in tents and makeshift areas during the moments and months following the earthquake.
Six months after this tragic event, The Brenda Strafford Foundation and The Institut remain committed to helping people in Haiti.
Current top priorities in our earthquake response:
- Continue providing all services
- Finish reconstruction of our property walls
- Repair our buildings to enable regular occupancy andeliminate the need for tents
Highlighted Achievements Since the Earthquake:
- Re-established all services by repairing the outpatient clinic, converting the pre-consultation area into a hospitalization & surgery area, and providing services n tents donated by UNICEF and Samaritan’s Purse
- Provided 26,000+ medical consultations
- Filled 30,000+ prescriptions for medication
- Performed 550+ surgeries
- Provided Foundation Tous Ensemble, a Haiti-based non-profit organization whose clinic was damaged, with space to provide their physical rehabilitation services on The Institut’s grounds
- Provided temporary shelter on campus to staff in need
- Distributed donated tents, tarps, food and water to staff and others in need
- Provided 106 emergency cash stipends to employees
- Structurally assessed The Institut’s buildings and the houses of 45 employees
- Provided 43 employees with housing repair grants
- Assisted 8 employees with rental accommodations
- Started reconstructing our destroyed property walls
- Provided valuable local insight to international organizations responding to the earthquake
